The real battle began shortly after the birth of our son in November 2001. One by One all three of our children had a life threatening reaction to a nut when accidentally ingested. Time to turn the tables on this horrific allergy. These three brave siblings are fighting back and beginning Oral Immunotherapy (OIT). Join us on our journey! OIT to begin Summer 2015 - Date TBAFitesVsNutshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12418743586128484071noreply@blogger.comBlogger18125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285911913635232244.post-13434599212018459392017-04-21T09:25:00.000-07:002017-04-21T09:25:02.779-07:00Faith starts OIT for Walnuts and Pecans For Faith, the end is in sight! Last week we spent nine hours in the office of Dr. Mayer to begin day one of oral immunotherapy for walnuts and pecans. <br />
<br />
The dose starts very minute and is increased each 1/2 hour throughout the day. We have never stayed this long and in the first round of OIT we needed to stop for an itchy throat MUCH earlier.<br />
<br />
As a result of our all day stay at Dr. Mayer's office, Faith went home with only three weeks of the liquid solution "D" and then onward to flour and actual whole nuts. It should take approximately 14 weeks for her to reach what Dr. Mayer considers to be "bite proof".<br />
<br />
Hunter is a few doses away from bite proof for cashew and pistachios. We will then go through the oral challenges to determine if he is allergic to any other nuts.<br />
<br />
Tori is done and enjoying eating whatever she chooses to eat!<br />
<br />
My nephew Blake is working his way through oral challenges and will begin OIT in the near future as well.<br />
<br />
We are so tremendously blessed with this opportunity. Dr. Mayer and staff are selfless and have devoted so much time into helping people of all ages to find freedom from food allergies.<br />
<br />
Since we started OIT last may, Dr. Mayer has graduated 100 more people through OIT for a total of 200 people completing OIT in his practice.<br />
<br />
We thank God for Dr. Mayer's commitment and look forward to a future with freedom!FitesVsNutshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12418743586128484071noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285911913635232244.post-84953184231320290442017-04-21T09:17:00.000-07:002017-04-21T09:17:28.096-07:00OIT Update - Celebrating the Milestones after 10 Months!<br />
Wow! What a difference 10 months can make!<br />
<br />
Tori is bite proof to cashews and pistachios. She passed food challenges and is not allergic to any other nuts.<br />
<br />
Faith is bite proof to cashews and pistachios, however she did not pass the walnut challenge, and will begin round two of OIT in April.<br />
<br />
Hunter is three <span style="background-color: yellow;">doses </span>away from becoming bite proof to cashews and pistachios and we are hoping like Tori, he passes oral challenges for the other nuts and will be on maintenance.<br />
<br />
Imagining a future that my kids no longer need to miss out on celebrations, summer camps and other outings seems almost too good to be true....and yet it is true! They are talking about what it will be like to go on vacation and be able to eat at a restaurant! While Tori is already in this place, Faith and Hunter are not quite there yet.<br />
<br />
I will say overall this process has been relatively uneventful. We are blessed to say that there have been no serious reactions. Two challenges that we have dealt with: 1) taking time off school to get to appointments and 2) getting passed the psychological challenge of ingesting nuts after years of strict avoidance.<br />
<br />
We do continue to work through each issue, and have found many ways to camouflage the taste and texture of the nuts. I don't believe anyone of us would trade the victory and the future filled with freedom for the inconvenience and challenges we have encountered. If asked, we would highly recommend OIT to anyone living devastation of food allergies.<br />

With the failing health of my father and his death, I have not found the time or mental energy to write about our journey. <br />
<br />
Thankfully, I have nothing negative to report. We have had absolutely no real issues with OIT. <br />
<br />
Tori is now "bite proof" for pistachios and cashews. Faith is struggling with today's updose - 1 pistachio and 2 "tads" of cashew - Hunter moving up to the next level of pistachio/cashew flour.<br />
<br />
The New Year will bring NEW freedom for Faith and Hunter. They will be bite proof for pistachios and cashews and we will find out if they are allergic to other Tree nuts at that time.<br />
<br />
Studies show that many times after desensitizing the worst nut allergy, the immune system reboots and the other allergies are gone. Praying this is the case for Faith and Hunter🙏until then we thank GOD and celebrate the victories along the way🎉🎉🎉<br />
<br />
I will attempt to update more often.<br />
<br />
If you are reading this and know someone with food allergies, please know there is HOPE! All three of our kids have experienced severe allergic reactions. I thought OIT would be stressful and we would have setbacks. It couldn't be going better! For more information about OIT you can visit Dr. Chad Mayer's website www.oitcenter.com<br />

THERE IS HOPE!FitesVsNutshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12418743586128484071noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285911913635232244.post-87824023646874426702016-07-28T10:20:00.001-07:002016-12-08T15:57:50.264-08:00Two Months into Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) -- ALL IS WELL!It has officially been two months since we began OIT. <br />
<br />
We have had no complications at all.<br />
<br />
We started off going in every two weeks for the new "updose" however Dr. Mayer has transitioned patents to weekly updosing and it has gone well. We now updose weekly. <br />
<br />
During OIT we have faced challenges of fitting in doses in order to observe the minimum two hour rest period. Sports camps, outdoor activities in the summer heat and vacations have at times provided obstacles, but we survived. <br />
<br />
We are now to the point that all three kids have been able to spend night(s) away from home and manage their dose while gone.<br />
<br />
This was probably one of my biggest concerns... well, one of my concerns.<br />
<br />
The other concern was vacations and dosing. I must have assumed we would have reactions or problems with OIT because vacations may have caused us to be creative with dosing times, but there has been no complications due to OIT.<br />
<br />
We are happy to be facing these nut allergies head on. <br />
<br />
Happy for a future without constant worry about what my kids will eat when away from our controlled environment.<br />
<br />
Our major reactions happened while on vacations and away from our controlled environment. Now that the kids are getting older, they have opportunities to travel and do field trips. One year from now, these options may be reality. The oldest is applying for graduate school, I am happy and hopeful that she will be through OIT when she goes away to college again.<br />
<br />
Overall, all is going very well! We have renewed hope for a future without constant worry.<br />
<br />
I thank God for the wisdom of doctors to begin this food allergy treatment and especially to Dr. Mayer for shepherding us through this process.<br />

May 18 begins our journey through OIT!XOLAIR is underway - Faith has received her third round of injections. <br />
<br />
OIT is back on for May 18.<br />
<br />
We are not nervous....OK well we are nervous! However we are so ready to begin this journey that will take us to a life filled with more freedom.<br />
<br />
A life that will allow our children to eat food that "may contain nuts" that they are allergic to. The goal of Oral immunotherapy for our children is to become "bite proof". They will likely never eat a hand full of nuts.<br />
<br />
So this begins the countdown to OIT.<br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">Where have I been?</span></div>
<div>
<div>
Why the silence?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have spent months of dealing with the anxieties and the after math of a severe allergic reaction. Our allergist suggested Faith's immune system would reset itself after 6 to 8 weeks.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That would have been September at the latest. We are now into April and her immune system never did reset itself. Chronic hives, major anxiety and asthma flare ups became a part of our daily lives.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Our allergist recommended we try Xolair injections. Xolair once approved for asthma is now approved for chronic hives as well. Faith qualifies in both spectrums which translated into the insurance approving what may have taken months and months of reviews in just two short weeks.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I have leanred that Xolair was originally in development for use with food allergies when a pharmaceutical bought the rights and developed Xolair for a much bigger market "asthmatics".</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The best way I believe to explain Xolair is that it has the potential to put asthma in "remission".</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Faith has received Xolair for the past two months. Three injections followed by a two hour waiting period. The next visit two injections and a three hour wait (due to allergy concerns). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Xolair itself can cause an anaphylactic reaction in A small percentage of </div>
<div>
people.</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Faith's allergies and asthma are not yet under control. Hopefully this month and the next series of injections will be the beginning of that control.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We have scheduled OIT for May 18. Our hope is that Faith's allergies and asthma are at a place where she can move forward. We have waited along time to begin this process of desensitizing food allergies. One year from today our lives could be so different, the quality of life so much better. It is our prayer that this OIT is successful for all three kids.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So the countdown begins. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Again.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you're reading this, please keep us in your prayers and believe with us in faith for healing.</div>

It is amazing how creative you can be when you need to cook food in a room that does not have a stove and microwave. We brought a griddle and foods that can be microwaved in the hotel microwave in the lobby.<br />
<div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
We will be <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">making a trip to the local grocery store to get food that can be prepared simply and easily.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">I believe most people think of an allergic reaction as an unfortunate but brief inconvenience. I believe they probably think...reaction, medicine, recovery...simple & easy. </span></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I know this because I formerly was one of those people who thought it was as simple as giving an epinephrine injection, going to the hospital and then easy street to the road to recovery....piece of cake. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Was I ever wrong.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As a result of being exposed to their nut allergens, I have watched my kids be suddenly unable to walk due to joint pain from inflammation, one experienced a collapsed trachea, two experienced chronic hives, all experienced major anxiety attacks, fears of eating, the list goes on. Whether these things resulted from anxiety, psychologically or physically, the result is the same - life altering.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Faith's most recent reaction a few weeks ago has resulted in chronic hives, asthma, fears, separation anxiety, food anxiety and resulting withdrawal from life and activities.</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
Our lives are most definitely interrupted to a degree I cannot begin to explain. My heart breaks for Faith's constant fear of eating and separation anxiety. Leaving for a quick trip to the grocery store is almost too much for Faith as she texts and sends me picture of her hives in fear that she is in the beginning of another anaphylactic reaction.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Two of my kids who experienced lingering health issues and fears also would not wear the clothes they had on during their allergic reactions. As if somehow the clothes played s role in the nightmare of Anaphylaxis.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If I did not have hope in God and believe that there will be better days, I don't know how I would get out of bed in the morning.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">This is one of the messages I recently received when I was out for a quick trip to the pharmacy. I had turned my ringer off at church and forgot to turn it back on...</span></div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Faith's chronic hives and rash continue, along with a sore throat. Dr. Mayer advised us we need to get Faith's current issues under control before starting OIT. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Frustrating... However it is important to be in the best health possible when starting OIT as it introduces serious allergens to the immune system.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Dr. Mayer will give us another date toward the end of August or early September.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
God has a plan and it is GOOD! So we patiently wait and know that eventually, we will begin OIT.</div>

Faith is extremely food and contact allergy phobic.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
There is not much I can say or do to change this, she continues to have hives and a cough and the mental scars of ingesting of food she was told would be safe however ended up causing a life-threatening allergic reaction.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The allergic reaction as terrible as it is and is scary as it can be, is only part of the problem. The fear and phobia that rises up inside of us when suddenly we wonder if there is a food that we can trust. God help us🙏</div>

<br /></div>
Day 8 of our vacation ended with one child experiencing an allergic reaction after eating at a new (to us) restaurant.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Despite questioning and confirming the safety of the food we ordered, she began experiencing breathing difficulty and stomach ache as soon as she began eating. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We calmly went to the car to use the AuviQ, however she did not feel immediate relief. Thankfully the hospital is within 2 miles of the restaurant. I drove to the hospital as a precaution.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The ER staff at McLaren Petoskey was the absolute best with their response to our allergic reaction. We have not received better ER care for our allergic reactions than this trip tonight. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As frustrating as these food allergies can be, there is nothing gained by getting angry or upset. I am thankful that my daughter is stable and for wonderful medical support.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
God is faithful to see us through each challenge we face and this challenge<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">is no exception.</span></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Needless to say it may be awhile before we brave a restaurant dinner again. </div>

Plans change!<div>
<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">As we went to bed, prayed through anxieties and accepted and anticipated day one of oral immunotherapy, God had other plans. Our doctor had a family emergency and messaged me in the night to let me know he needed to cancel our appointment. </span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Dr. Mayer was so apologetic, knowing how long it has taken for us to get to this day. I am a firm believer that family comes first and when family needs us, we do what we must do!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As surprised as I was to receive the message in the middle of the night as I stayed up watching the storm that loomed around us, there was a certain sense of peace that life happens and we are not in control. The God that created the universe had a different plan for our day. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
As quickly as I was caught by surprise, my prayers now turned to the family member of our doctor that was now in need. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Day one of Oral immunotherapy may be delayed, but it is imminent. Dr. Mayer will be fitting us into his summer schedule and the timing will be exactly as it should be. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Until then, we will enjoy the summer, get away for vacation and know that God's timing is always perfect.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>

We have waited 2 years for this day and we are as ready as we will ever be.<br />
<br />
The idea of not worrying every time my kids leave the house seems to good to be true.<br />
<br />
The idea of not checking each label and calling or emailing each manufacturer to verify the product is actually nut free.<br />
<br />
The idea of my kids not missing out on all of the fun and birthday goodies. Sadly, they would have appreciated this so much more in elementary school during the many birthdays they were unable to partake in snack.<br />
<br />
The idea of stopping at a bakery and buying anything without worry.<br />
<br />
The overall idea of living life and not fearing every new food and every new situation.<br />
<br />
The cost?<br />
<br />
The Risk?<br />
<br />
The cost is high. A loss of a certain amount of freedom.<br />
<br />
After each does (1 or 2 times each day) all 3 of my kids will need to not doing anything physically exerting in order to avoid raising their body temperature, metabolism, which in turn can trigger the body to react adversely to the dose. The "observation/inactive" period is 2-4 hours. Two hours minimal and four hours is ideal.<br />
<br />
Driving 1 1/2 hours one way to West Bloomfield seems to be a big deal, however before finding Dr. Mayer, I was preparing to drive or fly across country if necessary.<br />
<br />
The financial cost -- of which I have no idea.<br />
<br />
The psychological cost. Imagine the realization of eating poison - knowing it could potentially kill you.... that is what my kids will be experiencing. Eating the very thing that is at risk for causing a life threatening allergic reaction. <br />
<br />
This is at a much lower dose of course, and supervised by our allergist who has successfully desensitized people with very severe food allergies like ours.<br />
<br />
God has led us to this place, and it is with a bit of anxiety we move into the beginning.<br />
<br />
The beginning of new challenges, but also the beginning of reclaiming our quality of life. My children deserve to live and not be in fear of everything they eat.<br />
<br />
Here we go!FitesVsNutshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12418743586128484071noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7285911913635232244.post-2025240777085607152015-05-30T06:54:00.004-07:002016-12-08T15:52:52.342-08:00The Countdown begins - 24 days until we begin Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) for Tree NutsExcitement and anxiety are running high in our household. After battling life threatening food allergies for over 14 years, we are fighting back by beginning Oral Immunotherapy which will begin on June 23rd.<br />

Tree nut allergy is distinct from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanut_allergy" style="background: none; color: #0b0080; text-decoration: none;" title="Peanut allergy">peanut allergy</a>, as <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanuts" style="background: none; color: #0b0080; text-decoration: none;" title="Peanuts">peanuts</a> are <a class="mw-redirect" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legumes" style="background: none; color: #0b0080; text-decoration: none;" title="Legumes">legumes</a>, whereas a tree nut is a hard-shelled <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruit" style="background: none; color: #0b0080; text-decoration: none;" title="Fruit">fruit</a>.</div>

People with tree nut allergy are seldom allergic to just one type of nut, and are therefore usually advised to avoid all tree nuts, even though an individual may not be allergic to all varieties of tree nuts. Someone allergic to walnuts or pecans may not have an allergy to cashews or pistachios, even though close biological relatives often share related allergenic proteins. The severity of the allergy varies from person to person, and exposure can increase sensitization. For those with a milder form of the allergy, a reaction which makes the throat feel like cotton may occur . The raw nut protein usually causes a more severe reaction than the oil, and extra roasting or processing can reduce the allergic reaction. Those diagnosed with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaphylaxis" style="background: none; color: #0b0080; text-decoration: none;" title="Anaphylaxis">anaphylaxis</a> will have a more immediate mast cell reaction and be required to avoid all exposure to any allergen-containing products or byproducts, regardless of processing, as they are prone to even greater sensitivity. An allergy test or food challenge may be performed at an allergy clinic to determine the exact allergens. New <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immunotherapy" style="background: none; color: #0b0080; text-decoration: none;" title="Immunotherapy">immunotherapy</a> treatments are being developed for tree nut allergy.</div>

This allergy tends to be lifelong; recent studies have shown that only about 9% of children outgrow their tree nut allergy.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_nut_allergy#cite_note-autogenerated1-2" style="background: none; color: #0b0080; text-decoration: none; white-space: nowrap;">[2]</a></div>

Course of treatment begins in a hospital or clinic, but can eventually be done at home. Many studies at first worked to reduce reaction due to accidental allergen exposure, but more studies are moving to get rid of adverse reaction completely. Though most patients experience mild symptoms on the first day, severe reaction is rare, occurring in <2% of subjects in each study.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_immunotherapy#cite_note-OIT-1" style="background: none; color: #0b0080; text-decoration: none; white-space: nowrap;">[1]</a> However, almost every study has excluded patients with severe allergen-induced <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anaphylaxis" style="background: none; color: #0b0080; text-decoration: none;" title="Anaphylaxis">anaphylaxis</a>.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oral_immunotherapy#cite_note-review_2-4" style="background: none; color: #0b0080; text-decoration: none; white-space: nowrap;">[4]</a></div>

Our journey through OIT will begin on June 23rd under the direction of Dr. Chad Mayer. Dr. Mayer has successfully worked with many children and adults to desensitize their food allergy and thereby change the quality of life. We anticipate a future without constant worry and eating restrictions. We are concerned and anxious as we move toward the beginning of OIT as it means ingesting the very allergen that has triggered severe reactions and ended in the emergency room.</div>

Not just tree nuts, or peanuts, but also coconuts, and kiwi, and too many environmental allergies to list.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I grew up with severe allergies and asthma. I spent so much of my childhood fighting to breathe and trying to have a normal life...if I only knew then, what I know now...normal is just a word...normal is what we learn to accept for our lives.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My asthma was severe and relentless...despite my parents taking me to specialists, and trying to desensitize me through injections twice per week...my asthma was so maddening, and overpowering, that I made a vow to never have children so that I would never risk passing such a scary, crippling illness on to a child. <br />
<br />
Looking back, I wonder if my vow was simply to avoid disappointment later in life. I often heard doctors quietly explaining to my parents that I could become infertile due to large and frequent doses of every medication available to attempt to stabilize my allergies and asthma. Honestly, I am not sure which one weighed on me more...but that doesn't matter, because I have learned that God has the last word, despite my vow.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My first child was a perfect little girl. Immediately after her birth, she was diagnosed with severe allergies to dairy products. Thank God for soy formula. Continuous digestion issues led to tests, but all pointed back to food allergies. Thankfully asthma did not seem to be a chronic health issue for Tori, other than a small episode with difficulty breathing and an ER trip when she was two.<br />
<br />
Through trial and error we learned to avoid dairy products. Although our first born introduced us to food allergies, nothing really prepared us for what we would experience with the birth of our second child. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Many years later, and the answer to many prayers, Hunter was born. He was a big boy and extremely determined and strong at birth. Dairy allergies did not seem to be present, however he developed eczema early in his infancy. Our doctors warned me eczema could be a sign of allergies and also asthma. Hunter's eczema raged on as he approached his first birthday. The conservative approach to avoiding steroids was thrown out the window when his entire body was engulfed with eczema. We worked at eliminating food from his diet to determine what could be causing his eczema.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We were cautious introducing foods into Hunter's diet. Soon after he began eating soft toast the addition of a slight amount of peanut butter for flavor was followed with hives around Hunter's mouth. We made a note to ourselves not to give him peanut butter as this could be an issue.<br />
<br />
The first and most unbelievable day we realized we were dealing with a serious allergy issue was after a bath one evening. Hunter was approximately 18 months old. My husband had eaten cashews, washed his hands, and lifted Hunter out of his bath tub and wrapped him in a towel. Within minutes, Hunter was screeching that he was itchy. His armpits were bright red and he was furiously itching and crying for help. I want you to imagine two hand prints under his armpits. Two red, hive covered hand prints that belonged to my husband. Dale had gently picked up our son and wrapped him in a towel. Although Dale had washed his hands with soap and water, this was the result of Cashew oil left in the pores of his hands. We were in shock. This became our first "night watch" to make sure he was not having difficulty breathing.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I made an appointment and talked to the doctor about needing an epipen, knowing how serious this was obviously becoming. However, he deterred me from carrying the epipen due to Hunter's young age and the danger of overdosing even with a child's dose. He felt the ER was a better solution for a life threatening situation. I was not settled with this answer, but in those days I didn't realize it was up to me to advocate for my children. I trusted the doctor to know the best way to handle a life threatening reaction. There is no one else who can be a better advocate then a mother and a father. I can not say this enough, "you know your child best, trust your God given instincts, even if those instincts conflict with your doctors wisdom and medical science." Thankfully, we did not experience another reaction until after we established with our next doctor who immediately agreed we were to always carry an epipen and inhaler due to the severity of Hunter's allergies and asthma.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
A year more passed and we welcomed Faith Torina. While still in labor in the hospital room, along with my family members, we decided the name Faith was a testimony to the prayers that went into her arrival, and Torina was in honor of her big sister Tori.<br />
<br />
Life started out very simply and easy with Faith, sadly at two weeks eczema appeared on her face. We were now on high alert and decided it best to assume Faith had nut allergies like her brother. We were doing so well learning avoidance of nuts, Faith did not have any accidental exposures for quite awhile. <br />
<br />
At six months, Faith developed croup. Thankfully we had already established our family in a pediatric pulmonology office and the pulmonologist was able to reassure and help us through her first episode. (We met the pulmonologist initially after Hunter's emergency admittance to the hospital for an acute asthma episode.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One year for Faith brought pneumonia. Eighteen months, pneumonia....it became a pattern, despite our hope to control this horrible disease. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Hunter started Kindergarden. The first day of school, I approached the teacher with Hunter's epipen and inhaler, she said medicine needed to be locked up in the office. I am sure I must have appeared to be a bit worried. I explained that his concerns were life threatening and he needed them in the same room. I was sent to the principal who explained "district policy". <br />
<br />
I quickly realized that not only were we learning how to deal with life threatening food allergies, the rest of the world was much further behind in their understanding. The teacher and principal were only doing what they were instructed and prepared to do for us. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Hunter's doctor wrote a letter explaining the severity of the issue. An issue so severe, that there would be no time to wait for a cabinet to be unlocked and medication administered.<br />
<br />
The next obstacle was reaction time. Who at school would administer the epinephrine?<br />
<br />
Each year and each reaction provided new wisdom and insight in dealing with the allergic reactions. Thankfully our school leadership has been wonderful in helping to keep my children alive while in school. Through our trials and errors and accidental exposures and reactions, together we have established a food allergy action plan in our school district and continue to work toward improving and implementing policies and procedures to keep all children with life threatening food allergies safe and alive while in school.<br />
<br />
The journey continues, please join us as we document our fight against food allergies.</div>

In that time, our nut allergic children have had numerous life threatening reactions. Also known as anaphylaxis.<br />
<br />
Our children are severely allergic to tree nuts. One tiny dust sized particle could cause a reaction with the potential to be fatal.<br />
<br />
From Wikipedia:<br />
<br />
<b>Anaphylaxis </b><i>is a serious allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and may cause death. It typically causes a number of symptoms including an itchy rash, throat swelling, and low blood pressure. Common causes include insect bites/stings, foods, and medications.</i><br />
<br />
My children have experienced the range of reactions.<br />
<ul>
<li>Swelling and hives from head to toe.</li>
<li>Coughing, gagging and breathing difficulty. </li>
<li>Itching, hives, agitation.</li>
<li>The feeling of impending doom. </li>
<li>Vomiting, diarrhea, stomach ache. </li>
</ul>
We have experienced the complete range of "what to watch for in an allergic reaction".<br />
<ul>
<li>Difficulty breathing Swelling, particularly of the face, throat, lips, and tongue in food allergies</li>
<li>Light-headedness and dizziness due to a rapid drop in blood pressure </li>
<li>Unconsciousness</li>
<li>Hives – a blotchy rash that comes up very quickly, usually over the whole body</li>
<li>Tightness of the throat and sometimes a hoarse voice</li>
<li>Nausea and/or vomiting and diarrhea </li>
<li>Abdominal pain </li>
</ul>
Last summer our son had a reaction to a cross contaminated muffin while away on vacation. His sisters both ate the muffin, however within minutes he was coughing and experiencing breathing difficulty. He quickly self administered his Auvi-Q epinephrine device and got out of the sun to try and relax and keep his body temperature down. We observed him to make sure the reaction subsided.<br />
<br />
By midnight (12 hours later) the reaction came back with vengeance. His breathing was restricted and shallow, he was very sleepy. I observed his behavior to be highly unusual. He told me he had tried to use his inhaler but it had not worked. He then quickly self-administered the Auvi-Q and we called 911.<br />
<br />
This was one of the scariest times in our lives.<br />
<br />
On the ambulance I watched as he breathed and the EMT noted his labored but shallow breathing. Trying to stay calm for Hunter and to not appear absolutely crazy to the emergency medical workers. In my head I was screaming:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Are they be trained and equipped in the seriousness of a life threatening reaction? </li>
<li>Did they truly understand how serious this was? </li>
<li>Do they know they are working on my only son? The son I prayed for and begged for God to send me for over 10 years?</li>
</ul>
<br />
At the hospital, additional medication was given to counteract the anaphylaxis. My son kept asking me if he was going to die. If he was going to be ok? We prayed together, I prayed silently, and I watched and waited. Eventually the doctors and nurses convinced my son to try to sleep, and he made me promise I would not sleep but watch over him to make sure he was breathing.<br />
<br />
It was bad enough that I keeping my own fear inside and in check, Hunter was outwardly grieving and scared.<br />
<br />
After being monitored and stabilized for several hours, we were released. Released.... but what if?<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>What if the reaction started back up?</li>
<li>What if I couldn't stop it this time?</li>
<li>What if he eats something again?</li>
<li>What if I can't save him?</li>
</ul>
<br />
How could this be my life? We aren't supposed to have to worry about our kids every second of the day. We aren't supposed to worry about a trace amount of nut contamination that could kill them.<br />
<br />
God, what am I suppose to do?<br />
<br />
The days ahead were filled with nothing short of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.<br />
<br />
I was in shock, and my son was afraid to eat, afraid to leave the room for fear of breathing in a particle of nut somewhere.<br />
<br />
He was afraid to go to the fishing pier that he loved because someone may be eating nuts -- which fisherman do to pass the time away.<br />
<br />
He was afraid -- to get too warm in the sun, because it could cause his allergic reaction to rear its' ugly head.<br />
<br />
He couldn't breathe, his asthma after many years of lying dormant in his body, was severe and very active again, Hunter could not eat, and we were both mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted.<br />
<br />
We returned home five days later.<br />
<br />
Returned home to start middle school.<br />
<br />
My son was hardly able to focus to complete homework, I was hardly able to focus in make sure he was doing his homework.<br />
<br />
Keeping him in school was a struggle. We were literally treading water, except our heads were barely above the water. It felt more like slowly sinking.<br />
<br />
As a result of his severe reaction on vacation, Hunter's entire immune system was out of sync. He now was experiencing chronic hives and chronic asthma.<br />
<br />
His medication was changed.<br />
<br />
He used the Auvi-Q again and we spent another evening in the emergency room.<br />
<br />
Schoolwork was the last thing on his mind, and I struggled to keep up with what he was doing and still wondered if he should not even be attempting school at that time.<br />
<br />
What did he eat? Well, that is easy. Virtually NOTHING.<br />
<br />
He was afraid to eat anything.<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>toast for breakfast</li>
<li>a sub for lunch, with the same exact bread, meat and cheese every single day</li>
<li>plain pasta for dinner</li>
<li>hamburger</li>
<li>salmon</li>
</ul>
<br />
This list sums up the food he would eat.<br />
<br />
I found myself checking EVERY label again and then checking online on the allergy groups to check myself.<br />
<br />
Nothing was easy.<br />
<br />
His health had deteriorated, he had lost weight.<br />
<br />
It has been six months since the reaction on vacation.<br />
<br />
My son has slowly reintroduced foods into his diet -- which is good and bad. Good because he needs to eat more, bad because it makes me nervous.<br />
<br />
His reaction was so sudden, and yet his sisters did not react. How little was the particle or amount of oil in his muffin that one bite could change his life in such a dramatic way.<br />
<br />
The only way we truly survived this reaction and the aftermath was to pray and trust God.<br />
<br />
Trust God would see us through and believe that my son was born to serve a purpose on this earth.<br />
<br />
The best advice I can give to you if you are in a similar circumstance:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Turn to God with every fear.</li>
<li>Go easy on yourself.</li>
<li>Go easy on your child.</li>
</ul>
<br />
It takes time to recover from a dramatic life event such as an allergic reaction.<br />

We have walked on egg shells with nut allergies for the past 14 years. Despite our best efforts to keep our children safe from accidental exposure to nuts, they have had serious reactions more times than we are comfortable with.<br />
<br />
June 23rd will be the beginning of the head on battle - each of our children will begin Oral<br />
Immunotherapy with Dr. Chad Mayer in West Bloomfield.<br />
<br />
Although all will not agree that OIT is our best option, not one has walked a day in our shoes. <br />
<br />
Our first encounter with nut allergies was with our newborn son in 2001. As we learned through his encounters the severity of this horrible monster called food allergies, our daughter born in 2004 was the next survivor of an accidental exposure to a pretty cookie also known as a "cashew pinwheel" during my son's school event. And finally, our college aged daughter and older sister had her first life threatening reaction while in college. Strangely, she had eaten nuts her entire life and at 19 years old was suddenly very allergic.<br />
<br />
Urgent care/ER Visits, school emergencies, vacations emergencies, three ambulance rides, a dozen epinephrine injections and numerous close calls have lead to our decision to fight back.<br />
<br />
This blog will document our journey of living with life threatening nut allergies, and the journey of facing the giant head on. The gloves are off and we are ready! <br />
